Safe and durable: Demand for mosquito meshes and nets have increased.
Till recently, the menace of mosquitoes in twin cities and elsewhere was looked upon as a seasonal annoyance that needed use of simpler and temporary methods of keeping them at bay in households. However, those days have gone by. Now fighting the mosquito menace at households and surroundings has become a year-long process, prompting house owners to go to any length to ward off the menace. Although not fully efficient, mosquito mesh and nets are increasingly getting accept ance as a logical alternative.
With more and more research organisations claiming that using mosquito repellents laced with chemicals could lead to health complications, demand for mosquito meshes and nets have increased. “Mosquito nets and meshes have become mandatory at every household these days. However, people are forgetting the basic fact that unless they keep their environs clean, the menace would continue in one way or the other,” points out UGC-Fellow Researcher, Department of Zoology, B. Reddya Naik.
Wide range
The market is flooded with different varieties of mosquito nets and mesh products including detachable, sliding, Velcro models and even fibre glass models. Without putting much pressure on the finances, these varieties can be used to line doors and windows of a dwelling.
Companies that deal with installation of mosquito nets at homes charge anywhere from Rs.18 to Rs.22 per square feet of space. It also depends on the quality of net or mesh being used. A velcro net, because of its easy to install and relatively maintenance free features, are costlier while the detachable ones would cost a wee bit less. “The company technicians would visit houses or apartments and would prepare estimates and take measurements of doors and windows to be fitted with mosquito nets and meshes.
Aluminium coated frames, which give better results, have also entered the market. Once the estimation and measurements are finalised, it is just a matter of a day to fix the meshes,” informs Hari Prasad Varma of from Sahitya Marketing who deals with mosquito mesh products.
Experts advocate that in addition to the use of mosquito nets and meshes, biological methods would also come in handy in controlling the menace of mosquitoes.
